Inspirational Examples of Church & Religious Marketing

Recently updated on October 2nd, 2017 at 06:35 pm

Church marketing doesn’t have the greatest reputation for being visually appealing or persuasive. This has a lot to do with limited budgets, reliance on homespun design work, and the slightly old-fashioned view that church marketing ought to be very austere and serious! There is, however, some fantastic work being done by design professionals and talented artists all over North America to effectively promote churches, religious organizations, and outreach services.

Hopefully, this post will dispel the myth and prove to readers that religious marketing is just as progressive and modern as other industries.

This blog post represents a celebration of some fantastic design work within the spiritual community. It is intended to inspire church leaders and marketers to create something exceptional themselves. We have also provided a breakdown of one of these successful marketing pieces to help you create your own flyers, brochures, posters, and church promotions.

Church Marketing Design Breakdown

Flyer for “Free To Be The Change” Conference.

church conference flyer

Here’s a breakdown of why this flyer design works :

This informational flyer has all the elements of a good promotional piece. It has a headline, body copy, and all the relevant contacts, call-to-action icons, and info. More importantly, it has text and graphics displayed in easy-to-read segments to help the viewer navigate the information easily (imagine if the designer had tried to surface all this information in one column! There would be no way to distinguish one important information point from another. The date-of-the-event, cost, address, and action items are easily found in this flyer example)

The “easy” hand-drawn and casual font choices and a more personal and friendly feel. The text has also been laid-out and aligned in a careful and well-thought-out manner. Not only is the font-choice clear, but its size and placement make it very easy-to-read; it is surrounded by plenty of “negative space” to ensure that the viewer isn’t struggling to make sense of the text and images.

The soft color choices also suit the subject matter. The feminine pink and blues do a great deal to communicate the “female” aspect of the event and to appeal to the right audience. I doubt that dark reds, royal blues (perfect colors when you want to be super-bold and aggressive) and other such masculine colors would be as successful! Colors are very important for conveying certain subject and emotions. It’s imperative that you get the right balance of color when creating your own designs.

The main image of the hands exchanging the love heart is a very strong image that suggests love, friendship, and unity. A simple image and a simple message is always more effective than trying to communicate complex thoughts and feelings. Marketing images have to be immediate. It’s what the viewer expects. Just as it’s impossible to read a comic book in one glance, you can’t expect the viewer to respond instantly to something with lots of complex imagery…keep it simple.

I think it’s also fair to point out (and in most of the other religious marketing examples that are highlighted in this blog) that there is a conscious decision to move away from traditional crosses and other religious iconography in favor of a more contemporary image and view of religion. This particular promotion has none of the austere and “stuffy” characteristics of typical religious marketing.

  • Hopefully, this article has given you the inspiration you need to create your own church flyers, booklets, posters, and other marketing items. Upload your design today and start making wonderful and imaginative religious promotions.
