Alabama launches brochure campaign for Civil War 150th anniversary

To commemorate the 150th anniversary of the start of the American Civil War, the Alabama state tourism agency has begun a campaign to promote the historical and cultural significance of the Heart of Dixie.

Spearheading the campaign is a new brochure that highlights 47 attractions across the state, including battle sites and dates and places of war re-enactments, as well as a state Civil War Trail.

“We’re really making a big push for the 150th anniversary,” Edith Parten, the communications director for the Alabama Department of Tourism, told the Times Daily. “Our former brochure was old and outdated and we needed to be well-prepared for next year’s big celebration.”

The announcement of Alabama’s historical brochure campaign comes a couple months after the Shenandoah County Sesquicentennial of the Civil War Committee in Virginia released a print brochure highlighting care for the wounded in its commemoration the war’s 150th anniversary.

For history gurus and other interested individuals, the Civil War brochures tap the fascination of common Americans as a means of recalling a bygone era.
