5 Tips for a More User-Friendly Website

It’s competitive out here in the Webosphere, so it’s important to take the necessary steps to stay ahead of the pack. By grabbing your visitors’ attention and getting them to take an action, you guarantee that your website will be a success. But usability’s role can’t be understated in the overall success of your website. If you want your business to do well (or you simply want to drive more traffic to your site), it’s important that your website is user friendly and easy to navigate. To get the most out of your site, follow these 5 tips for making it more user friendly.

1. Make the content accessible. The text on your site should be very easy to read. It shouldn’t be hard on the eyes. The last thing you want to do is frustrate people and have them go to another site to find what they need. On the web, people tend to skim content instead of reading it word for word, so the information that you present should be easy to follow and pleasing to the eye. Also use a consistent font, and make sure the text doesn’t clash with your site’s background. There should be a good enough contrast between the background and the text so that everything can be seen clearly.

2. Go mobile. More and more people are using mobile devices, like smartphones and tablets, to access the Internet. As a result, it’s important that your website is mobile optimized. Otherwise, it will be difficult to navigate for mobile users and make for a subpar user experience. If your site isn’t currently supported by mobile, you can use a web-based mobile website builder to get you going. That way, users get a very similar web experience, whether they are on a laptop, a phone, or another device.

3. Make sure all facts are accurate and that there are no misspellings. Nothing can kill your site’s credibility faster than including information that is outdated or inaccurate. For example, if your company’s phone number or mailing address has changed, make sure this is reflected on your site. Also, the slightest misspelling might call your site’s credibility into question, so make sure all of your content has been proofed and is error free. Maintain your site to ensure that information is always up to date, including details about any products or services you’re selling.

4. Make your content concise and easy to find. From the moment a user arrives on your site, they should be treated to an easy, user-friendly experience. Busy homepages will confuse and drive away people before they even have a chance to check out what you have to offer. And easy navigation is just as important. Make sure you don’t include too many menus, that they align with the content in them, and that they include clear and concise text. For example, if your menu is “About Us,” don’t include testimonials of customers or a comprehensive list of product offerings. Rather, include your company’s mission statement or even a brief history of the company.

5. Decrease loading time. Time really can mean money, especially if you’re an e-commerce site that takes forever to load. People don’t want to sit around waiting for every single page on your site to properly load. Sites that have significant load times greatly hinder the user experience of the customer. This also ties into Tip #4. The simpler your website design, the faster your pages will load. Each page on your site should load within 4 to 6 seconds. Why? Because this isn’t 1995. Today, people expect pages to load quickly and without problems.
